A mindful outdoor experience is a 9-step process for entering into a mindful state while experiencing the natural world. Mindfulness simply means to be aware of the present moment and remember and know what is happening right now. Mindful Outdoor Experiences (MOE’s) involve slowing down, connecting with breath, and raising our awareness before we move over the land. We may invite mindful movement and then focus on different senses as we walk with awareness. An MOE often involves a period of reflective, seated practice called “sit spot” or “nature meditation”, in which we become still and observe what is happening around us in nature. Most MOE’s conclude with a practice of “council” in which each person shares about their experience in their sit, while everyone else listens with compassion.
